Make a design handoff explain behavior and decisions

Prepare a workshop-booking handoff with states, content, rules, responsive behavior, accessibility considerations, dependencies, and open questions so implementation does not depend on guessing from polished screens.

Share behavior as well as appearance

A design handoff is a shared understanding of what should happen and why. A polished workshop-booking screen can leave unanswered questions about pending requests, unavailable places, validation, and focus. Prepare the behavior and decision context alongside the visual artifact so implementation does not rely on reconstructing the designer's intentions.

Document states, rules, and dependencies

Document the main task, important states, data dependencies, and confirmed service rules. Include content and layout behavior for realistic lengths and narrow views. Specify accessibility expectations at the level needed for the component and task. Keep unresolved questions visible with owners rather than hiding them in comments that look like approved requirements. Separate what the team has observed, what it has inferred, and what it proposes to do next. These categories can sit close together without becoming interchangeable. A compelling account is still an interpretation unless its evidence is available for review. Keep the original context accessible through the approved project process, and avoid collecting more personal detail than the inquiry needs. Clear distinctions make later disagreement easier to resolve without erasing useful uncertainty.

Hand off a workshop-selection task

Prepare a handoff for selecting and confirming a workshop session. Include available, full, selected, pending, failed, and confirmed states. Describe what happens after a session becomes unavailable mid-task. Add a state table and a short walkthrough linking each action to its result. Use the prototype as supporting evidence of intent. Walk through one ordinary case and one case that challenges the assumptions. Keep the underlying question consistent so the contrast is interpretable. Note what changes in the artifact and what remains fixed. A rehearsal can reveal preparation gaps and contradictions, but it does not replace the actual research or service evaluation the project needs. Write that boundary beside the example so its apparent completeness cannot be mistaken for evidence.

Resolve gaps and contradictions

If the handoff explains only spacing and color, implementers still have to invent behavior. If annotations contradict the prototype, resolve the inconsistency before treating either as authoritative. If an operational dependency is unknown, do not write reassuring copy that promises an unverified outcome. Escalate the question to its responsible owner. If the output has no clear next use, revisit its purpose before expanding it. An attractive document that nobody can act on may be missing a decision, an owner, or a review condition. Add the minimum information that closes that gap. Avoid filling the remaining space with general recommendations; make the next step concrete enough that a colleague can carry it forward and report what remains unresolved.

Review the working feature together

Review the handoff together through an ordinary task and one failure case. Invite implementation questions early and review the working result after the feature exists. Keep the documentation current where later changes would otherwise create confusion. The handoff succeeds when collaborators can make consistent decisions and identify remaining uncertainty, rather than when a large file has simply changed hands.

A worked example

Worked decision

The full-session state identifies what replaces the selection control and which entered values remain available if another session is chosen.

Make a paper prototype for a workshop booking

Create and operate a paper booking prototype with state cards, realistic content, a facilitator script, and interruption cases, then record questions without treating the exercise as evidence of implementation behavior.
