You may have heard the song, The Most Interesting Man in the World, by TV comedian, Randy Newman. If you haven’t, you can check it out here on YouTube. But as interesting as he may be, I would argue that the most interesting woman in the world right now isn’t Kim Kardashian or Beyonce… it’s Juana Ahumada of Princeton, New Jersey. Her story is fascinating and her hope could change the lives of millions of women all over the world.
How I got my job
Entrepreneurs start businesses because they want to make money, but many successful entrepreneurs don’t have business backgrounds. As Juana Ahumada put it, she never had a formal education in fashion merchandising—she learned about it as she went along.
My biggest professional challenge
Our biggest challenge has been trying to gain recognition for what we do. The term ‘luxury’ is so overused that consumers get confused and don’t understand that luxury should be about quality, not just money. So we have had to explain to people that our products are unique because of how they were designed and manufactured, not because they cost a lot.
Why I do what I do
Why does Ahumada spend all of her free time making dolls? She said it’s because she’s passionate about ouji fashion, a genre that is deeply connected to Mexican history and culture. Ahumada began making her own miniatures almost 10 years ago, experimenting with different mediums before finally deciding on polymer clay. The result: realistic dolls with intricate clothes and accessories, each one modeled after a real person—but shrunk down to just a few inches tall.
My biggest mistake
I’m going to be totally honest with you, I went on a date once with a guy who was also wearing ouji. Juana Ahumada is a fashion icon, and I learned way too late that our taste in clothing was very much alike. It turns out that having matching wardrobes is not actually as romantic as it might seem; if we hadn’t already been attracted to each other before we saw how fashion-forward we were, that date could have been it for us.
What keeps me up at night
Is Juana Ahumada ouji fashion? A mysterious figure clad in a silver mask, long-haired wig and cheongsam; appearing at almost every festival throughout Tokyo. Her face remains a secret…for now.
My favorite strategy or tip
Let’s start by defining what Ouji fashion is. They are like little crystals that can be easily clipped onto your earlobes, hands, etc. Yes, they have been given that nickname because their biggest fan seems to be Juana Ahumada (the most interesting woman in world). You may not find them all that fascinating but what I really love about them is their versatility and subtle appeal. They can really spice up any outfit and give it a classy look without being too obvious or garish.
How technology helps me be more efficient
I always wanted to start an online business, but I couldn’t find any time. I had a full-time job and was about to get married, so I felt overwhelmed with all of my responsibilities. How do other entrepreneurs do it? Then, one day, when I was at work on my laptop doing some extra research for my boss (I didn’t have time to get to it before), I realized that most people are working from their phones now!
